Driving Tips for Fall Weather

Awards & Recognized By

As the Coronavirus travel restrictions are loosening, more and more people are driving to destinations throughout the United States while many people are still fearful to fly. With more people on the road, come more car, truck, motorcycle and tractor-trailer accidents. As you and your family travel on the roads during the upcoming fall months, remember to check the air pressure in your tires and be sure that your windshield washer fluid is topped off. Many car accidents are caused by simple things that we can do to prevent careless driving. For example, over-inflated or under-inflated tires may cause you to hydroplane on wet or icy roads. Inability to see out of your windshield can hinder your driving performance. Frequent usage of your windshield wiper fluid to clean your windshield may help you be a better driver as you will be better able to see any obstacles or objects in the road.

Always be on the lookout for 18-wheelers also. They have huge blind spots and seeing your car is more difficult when you have lights that are burned out on your car. Be sure to examine all of your exterior lights to ensure that they are working properly. We have all seen “that guy” driving at night with no lights on or with no brake lights. You do not want to be “that guy.” Before leaving on any road trip, be sure have check all your turn signals and brake lights. Also check the lights on the sides of your vehicle to ensure that they are operational. All of these things may help you avoid a car accident.

As the weather conditions change, so do the road conditions. Be sure to check your tire depths and make sure they have at least 5/32 of an inch of tread. Any less than that could cause your car to hydroplane or lose traction in the wet. Any tire store will be happy to measure the depth of your tread at no charge. Remember, the only thing keeping your car on the road is the tires and while your car may be in great condition, it is only as good as its tires.
